If you are anything like me, everytime you head into the piano studio with a student, you want to provide an inspiring and motivating lesson. You want to impart a love for the piano to your students, and show them what a modern piano lesson looks like.
At the same time, you understand the importance of growing a business and are excited about the new entrepreneurial opportunities of the online world.
I'm here to help shape your teaching and show you the path to a successful, contemporary piano studio that your students won't want to leave.
Thank you for extending yourself above and beyond what anyone could ever expect. You have been such a great source of encouragement and inspiration and I am most grateful for all you do. I can only imagine how blessed your students must feel having you as their teacher.
I’m super excited to say that I began watching Tim’s “Teaching 12 Bar Blues” course and have taught the first lesson to four students so far. One was the boy I’d like to “fire” because he just won’t practice! He got a big goofy smile on his face and laughed while he started playing. I hope this is the beginning of him loving piano.
I’ve been inspired by the chord-based piano videos at topmusic.co and my tween piano students love it! We are doing more improvising and churning through repertoire at a much higher rate than previously.
Nowadays there is SO much information out there and it's very nice to know that here you will find the best and most innovative resources.
Challenging and assisting music teachers is what I am all about. That's why I created this website.
I want to help you be the best teacher you can possibly be.
I believe music education is about inspiring students to create their own music, to explore a variety of genres, to be able to improvise, sing and understand music from the moment they walk into your studio.
The days of passing an exam and moving to the next stage are quickly becoming a thing of the past.
Today's music instruction should be about giving our students the tools to go on to become lifelong musicians.
Let's help our students to become more creative, curious and competent in their understanding of music.
I am an internationally-renowned music educator, piano teacher, writer and presenter.
I have more than 20 years of experience in education, having taught in the United Kingdom and a number of states of Australia in subjects as varied as music, outdoor education, PE, mathematics and IT.
Through my blog and podcast here at topmusic.co, I regularly inspire more than 20,000 teachers across the globe to become better educators for their students.
In addition, and to give an even deeper level of support to teachers looking for guidance, I have crafted a community of dedicated, creative teachers in my TopMusicPro.
I love speaking and have presented at conferences around Australia and overseas and my writing and products have been featured in American Music Teacher, The Piano Teacher, Californian Music Teacher and journals from music associations around Australia.
I was consultant editor for the Australian Music Examination Board's Piano for Leisure Series 4 books released in 2017, selecting, editing and writing performance, teaching and creative notes for 108 new pieces for student examinations.
When I'm not playing, teaching or helping others teach, I have varied interests.
I love good wine and top-notch coffee (which I guess is also why I love Melbourne!).
I'm a big fan of road cycling (not watching so much as doing). I love getting completely lost on Ancestry when I have the time.
I've climbed to Mt Everest Base Camp and returned with all my fingers!
I would love to get my Helicopter Pilot's Licence one day and will never forget my first pilot's lesson.
To give you an idea of what I'm all about, I'd love for you to download my first few lessons of my extremely popular TopMusicPro course called 4 Chord Composing.
This course is all about encouraging your students to write their own compositions from when they are beginners, all with just four simple chords. It's about making piano fun, relevant and inspiring.

Last year, I penned this heartfelt letter to try and explain the changing nature of music education to stubborn parents who want their child to simply complete exams.
To this day, my top rating blog post and free resource. Give your students the gift of pop music and watch their eyes light up.
