Teaching group piano, classes and labs

If you’ve ever wondered how you can have a wider impact on a larger number of students while increasing your income and teaching fewer hours, then group teaching month at topmusic.co is going to be perfect for you. Even if you don’t think that groups are your cup of tea, hang in there because teaching groups takes many different forms and this month’s articles and podcasts will consider all the different options and how you can test them out in your own studio. Teachers often tell me that they struggle to fit everything in: not just in their lessons (eg. theory, aural, sight reading, etc.), but also in their own lives: teaching, lesson preparation, going to workshops, exploring new ideas or repertoire and still finding time for family, friends and a social life. The problem is…

The problem is that when you trade time for money in a 1-on-1 arrangement, you can only create a finite amount of income from the time you have available and the more than you fill your schedule, the more you exhaust yourself.

So this month, we’re going to explore how teachers can break out of this tradition by chatting to people who are already making these changes and reaping huge rewards.

Group and class events can help you achieve extraordinary results, not just in terms of your students’ outcomes, but also financially, socially and personally.

If you want to get a taste for how group teaching works and some of the financial benefits you could enjoy, check out Paul Myatt’s fantastic post: 5 Secret Ingredients to Successful Group Piano Teaching.

We’re going to start small and show you how you how easy it is to add just one group activity or lab to your schedule to get started. This will build on the conversation I had with Michelle Sisler in Podcast Episode 27: “Piano Lab Time“.

We’re also going to talk to people who only teach group classes and find out how this works and the many benefits. We’re going to find out how you can get started with a minimal amount of equipment and we’ll explore all the different ways that you can think about offering “group” sessions, including masterclasses, theory lessons and many more.

I can’t wait to share these ideas with you as I know that for many people, these ideas could literally be life changing. Stay tuned to TTTV this Friday when I interview Paul Myatt and his business partner Gillian Erskine all about how they built Forte Music Schools around group teaching.
