It’s been a long-held ambition of mine to provide a certification for music teachers interested in a more holistic approach to instrumental music teaching.
I’m delighted to announce that we’ve begun the process of making this a reality!

We’ve spent a long time evaluating the existing music teacher certification programs on the market, and we felt something was missing.

Our unique approach to teaching stands up to modern critique in ways other programs do not.
Our 12-week cohort-based program offers a holistic student-first approach to music teaching. It also provides you with the business acumen and studio growth formulas to build a wildly successful studio in 2023 and beyond.
Starting with our BETA Cohort in July 2023, we’ll be offering teachers around the world the chance to earn recognition for their skills and ensure their studio is future-proof by becoming a Certified TopMusic Teacher.
We firmly believe this will become the go-to standard for any teacher entering the profession in the next few years while at the same time being a highly-valued qualification for more experienced teachers too.
We’ll also be working hard to educate parents and adult students about the value of an Integrated Approach and can see opportunities for certified teachers to be listed on a new TopMusic teacher directory.
The majority of independent music teachers working from home have no formal qualifications.
While we don’t consider that an issue, this leaves many teachers feeling inadequate and sometimes like an imposter.
Furthermore, as an unregulated industry, there are currently no global standards of what a ‘qualified’ music teacher actually looks like or needs to demonstrate. This makes it hard for parents and institutions to be able to pick good teachers from ‘poor’ teachers or to understand the skill levels and strengths of any particular candidate.
We really want to offer quality standards in an industry that has always been lacking internationally-recognized formal qualifications.
We want to work together with the exam boards, music teacher associations, universities, and other organizations to see where we can align.
The bigger picture for us is to help professionalize our industry so that independent teachers have more confidence, are treated with more respect, and understand their career path.
We want to move the career of music teaching away from “hobby” over to “profession.”
It’s too long been seen as almost akin to babysitting for some people. Not anymore!
With so many changes in the music education industry over the last 10 years, and much more looming, our certification will offer music teachers a chance to:
Just like the music teaching we advocate, our certification program will be assessed with creativity, thoughtfulness, and customizability.
We realize that there are many ways of assessing teachers and so we’ll be using a variety of modern approaches including peer reflections, portfolios, videos, audio, and written articles.
As a digital-first ed-tech company, TopMusic is best placed to offer an outstanding 21st-century model for teacher education (expect things like online group chats and virtual meetings!)
Any teachers who are open to structured and supported professional development within a supportive community.
New teachers and experienced teachers.
Students who are still at university level and embarking on a performing or teaching career.

This will be a certification that stands alone. We’re not trying to duplicate any of the other credentials out there.
July 2023 will see the first BETA cohort, available only to TopMusicPro members.
We will then be opening to the public December 2023, ready for the January cohort.
